as far as my project goes, i thought it was an interesting way to look at mapping and typography together and the opportunity it gives me to use this as a reference or jumping off point when i'm trying to modify and personalize a map that i'll be constructing.

I'm still deciding on if I am making this person or place, but my concept can apply to both, so I have already begun to gather some documentations anyways. I chose San Francisco as a place because of its importance to my life for the past two years. How ever corny this sounds, I am in a long distance relationship and my boyfriend goes to school in SF. It has become a second home for me and also a place I hope to see myself in the future. I re printed my document on some colored paper and made a journal like book adding some end papers and a cover made from this really natural looking paper from France and is lined with another patterned paper also from France. The idea was to make the book look like a personal journal where one jots down thoughts or feelings.

In class on Tuesday I revised my script by making it into a book. Originally I wanted the blank pages I have placed in between the lyrics to behave like leaves or something of that nature when he flipped through them and dropped them to the floor, but it made the script feel separate from the performance. To bring them together I decided that because the lyrics are essentially a ballad, I would make it into a book or a journal that looked personal that the performer will be reading this love ballad from. I only made a mock up book that he will be able to study for the pronunciation part of the performance, but I will replace that book with a more developed version of the same pacing. I plan to make and stitch bind the book

Script Progress-Hide and Seek

So I'm trying to clean up my script and make it more cohesive and not all over the place but I want to keep the tone I had originally with the highs and lows emphasized. I'm trying to capture personal struggle, emotional struggle. I think I shot myself in the foot when choosing this song. It's much harder then I thought it would be. And my ideas for stage prop are not working out. I want the performer to convey some form of struggle but all the ideas I've come up with are not plausible.

I dunno I'm stressed to say the least right now. :(

So I tried to keep pushing the type, messing with hierarchy and emphasis. I pretty much just picked out the parts of the monologue that i felt needed the most emphasis and treated them appropriately. This is the first round of experimentation I have done. I am trying to do things in steps -- the first things I'm doing are getting the pacing and rhythm and time down correctly. I'm also working with placement, and the relationships each lyric has with its surrounding lyrics. It feels a little like Type 1 [A2 studies] but without the hand cramps and its a bit harder. After this, I want to go in by hand and make some changes in placement or typeface and color etc.

things are coming - but i'm not sure i feel completely comfortable taking on the stipulations of the assignment. i am worried that things will come across too straightforward - whether that is in presentation or the textual visual queues.

CONSIDERATIONS:
i'm still going through lists of songs and poems. for myself, it seems like things that don't have an immediate inclination to be performed come off the most valuable.

Typography and language are inextricably linked. So it is not so far-fetched to ask, how can typography become a performance? How can materials, composition, space, medium, scale, repetition, etc. determine how someone interprets the words?

Choose the lyrics to your favorite song, poem or a monologue from your favorite film. Set the words, in an expressive manner that acts as a "script" or "visual score" for the performance. Be as poetic or literal as you like, but keep the following in mind:

1. You can only use the words from the lyrics or monologue. This means no stage directions. Let the words SHOW how they are meant to be performed. Having said that, if your piece is a projection or 3D, you may want to give the performer instructions on how to INTERACT with the piece, but again, no instructions on how to READ it.

2. Think about what the words mean to you. How can you get the performer to express that meaning?

3. The piece will not only be a guide for the performance, it must be an object that enhances it. What form will your "script" take? What size is it? Can it be held? Is it folded? Is it 3D? Is it a projection?

DUE NEXT WEEK: a draft of your script/score. You will choose a classmate, and ask them to perform your piece. Pay attention to how s/he performs. Does it match your intention? REVISE.

DUE IN TWO WEEKS: Your final "script." We will deliver everyone's work to a guest artist. He will spend one week getting to know your piece before he stages your typographic compositions in class.

The first because I'm always afraid that things aren't going to work out, but they always do...
And the latter because I was a hardcore ballet dancer until I was 16... I did it six days a week, it was my life. And then one day I was late for a dress rehearsal so I ran on stage without stretching because I didn't want to get yelled at more by the director... So that led to an injury that led to many other injuries that culminated my dancing career... It was a sad time... But thats when I started dabbling in visual art/graphic design, so I guess it all worked out!

Assignment #4: Type in Motion

People often say, "if I only knew then what I know now." Without using "fancy" programs (i.e. aftereffects, flash, other animation software) send a message to your past self using type in motion. What will you choose to reveal about the present to your past self? How will you use motion to tell the story of a significant way in which you have changed? ONTON Morse Code

What is an ONTON an oONTON is an action done while you are on ONE. Back in my partying days my friends would always do weird things while we where messed up. My friend Nick would always try to write letters to people but never write them he would just tap dots on the paper and we would say it was morse code. So it would be "dude look at nick being all ONTON over there" So for my process I looked up morse code to go with my idea and spell out ONTON

Sorry about my tardiness of my process post this week, I've been battling sickness and other outside life influences/mishaps...

My word is a word that describes something that usually takes me at least 4 sentences to describe, so I'm pretty excited about shortening it to a single word.

Right now its between caxiv and zinid, so I'm doing explorations of both of these words... I don't want to post my few explorations, for I fear that I may give you too many clues... I guess you'll just have to wait until Tuesday!

Here I have laid out my "pattern" on the fabrics I have chosen to make my word out of. After I pinned it to the fabric, I carefully cut it out and began to sew. I'm just about done sewing the two pieces together and am stuffing and closing up my word.

STORY:
this good fellow posterish was supposed to be my attempt at a pixar movie-film one off. i took the characters of my language and attempted to build something that resembled physical objects the could be recognizable. i found that one of my character forms looked something like a man wearing a mask - which i tried to highlight with the red. i also see another face somewhere near the top left, but that might be because i am cuckoo and imagining thingers.
